چکیده

Echocardiography was performed on 5 patients with extracardiac masses. Four patients had solid tumours and the fifth had a cystic intrapericardial haematoma. Case 1 showed dense echoes anterior to the aortic root and over the right ventricle. Thoracotomy disclosed malignant infiltration ofthe anterior heart wall. The echocardiogram of case 2 showed a dense mass behind the anterior mitral leaflet, left ventricle, and the left atrium. Bronchoscopy disclosed a carcinoma of the left bronchus. An x-ray film of case 3 was suggestive of a pericardial effusion; no echoes were recordable from the left sternal border, and echocardiography from the right sternal border showed no evidence ofpericardial effusion. Necropsy showed a sarcoma which displaced the heart to the right. The ultrasound recording on case 4 in the supine position showed a dilated right ventricle and right ventricular outflow tract, and no evidence of pericardial effusion. In the left lateral position a large space in front of the right ventricle and a paradoxical decrease in right ventricular size were noted. Surgery showed an intrapericardial cystic haematoma anterior to the right ventricle. Echocardiography on case 5 showed a pericardial effusion and thickening (1.5 cm) of the anterior wall of the right ventricle. At operation a lymphoma infiltrating anterior wall of the right ventricle and a pericardial effusion were found. Careful gain control, examination of the patient in different positions, and placement ofthe transducer

Cross-sectional echocardiographic characterization of atelectatic lung segments. Differentiation from extracardiac tumors.

This report describes a unique series of patients who, during routine cross-sectional echocardiographic examination, were each noted to have a large echo-dense extracardiac mass adherent to the lateral aspect of the left ventricle. While this echo-dense mass was considered initially to represent an extracardiac tumor, this mass was shown subsequently to be an atelectatic segment of the left low...

Diaphragmatic hernia mimicking an atrial mass: a two-dimensional echocardiographic pitfall.

Two-dimensional echocardiography has become the diagnostic method of choice for identifying intracardiac masses. However, adjacent extracardiac structures may closely mimic intracardiac masses on the two-dimensional echocardiogram. Five cases of a previously unrecognized phenomenon in which a diaphragmatic hernia mimicked an intraatrial mass are reported. Techniques to identify a diaphragmatic ...

Respiratory maneuvers in echocardiography: a review of clinical applications

During echocardiographic examination, respiration induces cyclic physiological changes of intracardiac haemodynamics, causing normal variations of the right and left ventricle Doppler inflows and outflows and physiological variation of extracardiac flows. The respiration related hemodynamic variation in intra and extracardiac flows may be utilized in the echocardiography laboratory to aid diagn...

An extracardiac unruptured right sinus of valsalva aneurysm complicated with atherothrombosis

UNLABELLED SummaryWe present quite a rare case of extracardiac unruptured right sinus of valsalva aneurysm (SVA) complicated with atherothrombosis in a young adult man. A 35-year-old male with a giant unruptured SVA arising from the right coronary sinus (RCS) with extracardiac protrusion was diagnosed by echocardiography. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CT) revealed a huge calcified aneu...

Diagnostic performance of CMR and transthoracic echocardiography in clinical evaluation of cardiac masses with histopathological correlation

Background Echocardiography is the preferred initial imaging method for assessment of cardiac masses. However, CMR, with its excellent tissue characterization and wide field of view, can provide unique information in the evaluation of cardiac masses. Our objective was to identify CMR and echocardiographic parameters that predict the presence of tumor or malignancy in biopsy proven cardiac masse...
